Blue-green marks on a sink, tub or shower can point to copper entering the water from household plumbing. They can also come from cleaners, fixture finishes or materials that have nothing to do with the water supply. The color alone is not enough to choose a treatment system.
Before requesting estimates, document where the stains appear, when they return and which plumbing serves the affected fixtures. Then test the water for conditions that could make copper plumbing more likely to corrode.
Start with the stain pattern
List every place where you see the discoloration. Note whether it appears below faucet openings, around drains, along drip paths, inside toilet tanks or only on surfaces cleaned with a particular product.
Copper-related staining is more plausible when blue-green deposits repeatedly form where water sits or evaporates. A single colored spot on one fixture is weaker evidence, especially if other fixtures supplied by the same plumbing remain clean.
Photograph a cleaned surface and check it periodically under similar lighting. This provides better information than trying to remember how quickly the stain returned.
Rule out surface products and fixture materials
Clean a small affected area using a method approved for that surface. Stop using colored soaps, bath products and cleaners there while you observe it. Residue from those products can resemble a water stain.
Also inspect the fixture itself. A deteriorating finish or corroding brass component may create localized discoloration even when the home's copper pipes are not the source. If the mark occurs only at one faucet, compare that fixture with another supplied by the same hot and cold water lines.
Compare hot, cold and unused water
Fill separate clean, white containers with cold and hot water from the affected fixture. Look for visible tint or particles, but do not treat clear water as proof that copper is absent. Dissolved material may not be visible.
Repeat the cold-water check after the faucet has been unused for a while, then collect another sample after running the water. A difference between those samples can help a water professional determine whether contact with household plumbing is contributing to the problem.
If staining appears mainly on the hot side, include the water heater, hot-water piping and recirculation equipment in the investigation. If it appears at both hot and cold fixtures throughout the house, the possible source may be broader.
Map the plumbing before blaming the source water
Find out whether the home has copper supply piping throughout, only in certain branches or not at all. Look for transitions between copper, galvanized steel, plastic piping and brass components. Mixed metals, repairs and newer sections can make the problem uneven from room to room.
Ask whether the staining began after plumbing work, a water heater replacement, a long vacancy or a change to existing treatment equipment. Timing does not prove the cause, but it helps define which parts of the system deserve inspection.
Request testing that answers the actual question
Ask the testing provider how samples should be collected and which laboratory will analyze them. For a copper investigation, it may be useful to compare water that has remained in the plumbing with water collected after flushing. The collection method should be recorded with each result.
Discuss testing for copper along with pH, alkalinity, hardness and other measures the provider uses to evaluate whether water may be corrosive. If the house uses a private well, the source water and water from an affected indoor fixture may need separate samples. If treatment equipment is already installed, samples from before and after that equipment can show where conditions change.
Do not accept a treatment recommendation based only on a photograph of the stain. Ask the company to identify the evidence connecting the proposed equipment to the confirmed cause.
Questions to ask before buying treatment
Ask each company to explain:
What test result or plumbing observation supports the diagnosis? Where does the company believe the copper is entering the water? Is the issue limited to one fixture, the hot-water system or the whole house? What water condition is the proposed equipment intended to change? How will that change be measured after installation? Could the treatment affect scale formation, taste, flow or existing equipment? What maintenance is required to keep the treatment working? When and where will follow-up samples be collected?
A useful proposal should connect the observed problem to a specific finding, then connect that finding to a measurable treatment goal.
Know when the plumbing itself needs attention
Water treatment cannot repair a leaking fitting, a failing fixture or pipe that has already deteriorated. If you find pinhole leaks, damp areas, visible corrosion or repeated failures in copper piping, arrange a plumbing inspection as part of the diagnosis.
The water and the plumbing may both require attention. Treating the water without checking damaged components can leave an active leak or localized corrosion unresolved. Replacing one fixture without examining the water conditions can allow similar staining to return elsewhere.
Make the decision from evidence, not color
Before approving work, you should be able to describe where the stain occurs, whether it is tied to hot or cold water, what the plumbing is made of and what the relevant water tests found. You should also know how the company will verify that its solution changed the condition it was hired to correct.
If those answers are still unclear, keep investigating. Blue-green staining is a clue. It is not, by itself, a complete diagnosis or a reason to buy a particular treatment system.
