A water softener or filtration system can stop meeting your needs for several reasons. The equipment may need a straightforward repair, the water conditions may have changed, or the original system may never have been properly matched to the home. Before replacing everything, identify what the current equipment treats, what has failed and what result you expect.

Start with the problem you can observe

Write down the specific change that prompted the service call. Useful details include when the problem started, whether it affects every faucet and whether it is constant or occasional.
