Grit in a drinking glass does not automatically mean your home needs a whole-house sediment filter. The particles could be coming from a faucet aerator, a deteriorating water heater component, corroding plumbing, work on the public water system or sediment entering from a private well.
Before asking a water treatment company for equipment, find out where the particles appear and under what conditions. That evidence helps separate a house-wide water problem from a repair that may involve only one fixture or appliance.
Start by describing what you actually see
Fill a clean, clear glass with cold water and hold it against a white background. Note whether the material looks sandy, flaky, stringy, rust colored, black or white. Let the glass sit undisturbed and see whether particles settle, float or disappear.
Particles can suggest a direction, but appearance alone cannot identify a material with certainty. White flakes may be mineral deposits, but they may also come from components inside a water heater or faucet. Dark particles may come from rubber parts, filter media or plumbing deposits. If identification will affect what you buy, collect a sample and ask how it can be examined or tested.
Check more than one faucet
Test cold water at several locations, including a faucet near the point where water enters the home and another at the far end of the plumbing. Remove and inspect each faucet aerator if it can be removed safely.
If grit appears at only one faucet, the likely source is close to that fixture. The aerator may contain old deposits, or a nearby supply line, shutoff valve or faucet component may be deteriorating. Clean the aerator, flush the faucet without it and test again. A whole-house filter is unlikely to solve particles created after the water reaches that faucet.
If particles appear at several cold-water fixtures, the source may be the incoming supply, a private well, older household piping or existing treatment equipment. That finding justifies a broader inspection.
Compare hot water with cold water
Fill one glass from the cold side and another from the hot side of the same faucet. Use a fixture where hot and cold water have separate controls if possible.
Particles found only in hot water point toward the water heater or the hot-water piping. Sediment can collect in a tank, and internal components can deteriorate. Ask a plumber or water treatment company to identify the material before adding filtration to the main water line. Filtering incoming water will not remove debris that is being created inside the heater.
If both hot and cold water contain similar particles, continue tracing the problem toward the point where water enters the house.
Notice when the problem happens
Record what was happening before the grit appeared. Useful details include whether the water had been unused overnight, whether a shutoff valve was operated, whether plumbing work was completed, whether an existing filter was serviced or whether the well pump had been cycling differently.
A brief burst of particles after a faucet has been unused may indicate deposits inside household piping. Grit that continues through several minutes of flow suggests a continuing source. Particles that appear immediately after a filter change may indicate improper assembly, insufficient flushing or escaping filter media.
Do not keep flushing indefinitely without a plan. Capture samples at the beginning and after a measured period so a contractor can compare them.
Check existing treatment equipment
If the home already has a filter, softener, neutralizer or other treatment system, inspect the area around it for bypassed valves, leaks and recent service labels. Ask whether any equipment contains granular media that could escape if an internal distributor or screen fails.
Test water from a sample port before the equipment and from a fixture after it, if suitable sampling points exist. This comparison can show whether the treatment system is removing particles, creating them or making no difference. Do not open a pressurized tank or housing unless you know the correct shutdown and pressure-release procedure.
For a private well, look beyond the filter
A sediment cartridge may catch grit from a well, but it does not explain why the material is entering the water. Possible sources include disturbed soil, changes in pumping conditions, problems with the well screen or casing, or a pump installed where it draws sediment.
Ask the contractor to check the raw water before treatment and to document how quickly a test filter loads. Also ask whether the pump, pressure tank and well construction should be evaluated. Installing a finer cartridge without understanding the flow may produce frequent clogging and low pressure while leaving the underlying problem unresolved.
For public water, identify the boundary of responsibility
If similar particles appear throughout the house on cold water, ask the water utility whether it can check the service connection or provide guidance on collecting a sample. Then ask a plumber to consider the service line and household piping.
This distinction matters because treatment equipment inside the home cannot repair a deteriorating pipe. A filter may capture loose material, but the appropriate next step may be plumbing work or investigation of the incoming supply.
Know what a sediment filter can and cannot do
A sediment filter is designed to capture particles above a particular size. It may be appropriate when the source cannot be eliminated and the particle load is manageable. It does not remove dissolved substances, identify the material or correct corrosion, failing plumbing, well damage or debris generated downstream of the filter.
When comparing proposals, ask each company to state the suspected particle source, where the filter would be installed, the filter rating, expected flow at that rating and how pressure loss will be checked. Ask what condition will indicate that the cartridge or media needs service. The proposal should also explain what happens if the filter plugs sooner than expected.
Bring useful evidence to the service call
Save labeled water samples from affected locations if the contractor agrees they will be useful. Take clear photos of particles in a white sink or clear container. Write down which fixtures are affected, whether the problem occurs on hot water, cold water or both, and how long the water must run before it clears.
The goal is not to diagnose the entire system yourself. It is to give the contractor enough evidence to test a specific explanation. Before approving equipment, ask what observation or test supports the proposed solution and how you will confirm after installation that the original problem has been solved.
